Apple TV and changing entertainment
I have read a few articles now on Apple TV, and done some research on home entertainment networking. In my last house, I built a full on theatre in my basement. Ninety-one inch screen built in to the wall, light sealed, it was fairly impressive considering I spent less than $1500 doing it.
When I moved on to my new house, I left the theatre behind, as part of the agreement. It basically sold the house for me.
Now I have a problem. I have four televisions in my house, and only one tivo box. My wife’s television choices are aggravating at best, downright unwatchable at worst. Hour long Home Depot commercials are not my idea of entertainment.
So, while she is watching trash, my tivo is trapped. I won’t watch television live anymore, so I basically have to sneak in my favorite shows when she is not around, or just let them stack on the hard drive.
Apple TV is an excellent idea, just like iTunes was an excellent idea. Let me buy what I want. That is the key to it’s success. I do not want the trash that bands put on their CDs as filler. Their little conversations or clever skits. CDs cost $15 a pop, and I am paying for about a half hour of music and 15 minutes of bullshit that I don’t care about.
Let me do that with TV and you’ve sold me. I can go buy the two television programs I actually want to watch, and save about $90 a month on my cable bill. Excellent, makes me a happy consumer.
My feeling is this though, take it one step further. Add multiple ports onto that Apple TV. I’ll pay extra for an enhanced device, it is worth it to me. Give me four S-Video outputs on the back of that puppy and you have my $400, and not only that, you have my loyalty.
